While Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith are all set to reprise their roles in the forth The Matrix movie, not all franchise favorites will be returning. In a recent interview with Time Out, Hugo Weaving who starred as Agent Smith revealed that he was approached for the reboot, but had to turn the offer down.

Perhaps one of the most iconic movie villains of all time, Agent Smith appeared in every series installment so far — The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions. His legendary sneer and sharp suit game will be missing from the fourth, Weaving revealed, because of schedule conflicts.

"It’s unfortunate but actually I had this offer [for theater production, The Visit] and then the offer came from The Matrix, so I knew it was happening but I didn’t have dates," he explained. "I thought [I] could do both and it took eight weeks to work out that the dates would work – I held off on accepting [a role in The Visit during that time]."

Weaving continued, "I was in touch with [The Matrix franchise director] Lana Wachowski, but in the end she decided that the dates weren’t going to work. So we’d sorted the dates and then she sort of changed her mind. They’re pushing on ahead without me."
