How to Make ASICS' Dad Shoe Daddier? Make It a BBQ Sandal
The ASICS GEL-1130 is a textbook example of a dad shoe. These grey sneakers originally dropped in the 2000s as an entry-level running shoe, where they quickly infiltrated the suburban dad uniform, and have since become the subject of seemingly never-ending semi-ironic reappropriation as chunky runners claimed the recent limelight. Last year, the Gel-1130 was resale platform StockX’s best-selling shoe.
That’s the life cycle of a dad shoe in full effect. But now that the GEL-1130 has completed its journey from no-thrills running shoe to universally desirable sneaker, where does it go next? Per a Summer 2026 release, by becoming even more elderly.
The new GEL-1130 CV is most easily described as the lovechild of ASICS quintessential dad shoe and an orthopedic double-strapped dad sandal. It’s a dad shoe made even daddier, ready for summer barbeques and poolside stuntin'.
This chunky cook-out sandal keeps the big cushioned sole of its predecessor but lets the dogs out through an open toe, exposed medial portion, and heel cutouts. That means you don’t lose any of the 1130’s signature cushioning, but you gain a whole lot of airflow. It also means the shoe evolves from the now-widely-accepted form of a chunky 2000s sneaker and into a freakier open-toed direction.
This isn’t quite uncharted territory: visvim’s equally elderly-looking slides have long commanded four-figure resale prices, Demna’s Balenciaga was also a fan of oversized double-strapped sandals, and fellow dad-shoe-maker New Balance has recently been making sandals from sneakers.
However, the dad sandal is yet to garner anywhere near the popularity that dad sneakers have gained over the past decade-plus. Maybe bulky open-toed runners are a step too far into the direction of a senior citizen’s staple for widespread adoption. But in a time when freaky toe shoes are in fashion, anything can happen.
