BEAMS Inverted the Birkenstock Boston
BEAMS didn’t have to look far to find the perfect pattern for its Birkenston Boston clog. In fact, the Japanese store only had to flip the German-made sandals over.
The Japanese mega-retailer and longtime Birkenstock collaborator has brought the bone pattern typically utilized as tread on Birk’s soles to the top of these clogs. The squiggly pattern is now directly in the spotlight rather than hidden underfoot.
Of course, the black leather upper of this Boston clog doesn’t need grip-providing ridges like the sole, so the imprint is purely aesthetic here. When embossed into the leather upper, this wavy composition infuses the clog with some serious texture, a little extra visual appeal for a shoe defined by its silhouette.
BEAMS has made the case for the stylistic benefits of this bone pattern several times.
The collaboration-crazed company first tried it out on Birkenstock's double-strapped Zurich model, creating a stunner of a slide, and followed that up with an equally stylish patterned London clog.
But this is BEAMS’ first time etching the bone shapes into smooth leather rather than hairy suede, making it marginally subtler. It’s also the first time covering a Birkenstock Boston, a shoe that’s turning 50 years old this year, with the swirling print of its sole.
As it goes, BEAMS is the same age and these limited-edition Bostons, releasing on March 22, are one part of the huge 250+ item BEAMS 50th birthday collection.
Happy Birkenstock Boston half-century and happy BEAMS half-century, for all those who celebrate!
