Universal Pictures has released the first official trailer for Jordan Peele's anticipated Candyman reboot. Directed by budding filmmaker Nia DaCosta, the picture is a contemporary reinterpretation of the cult classic horror story.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who also featured in Peele's Us, stars in 2020's Candyman as visual artist Anthony McCoy. The film begins as he and his girlfriend, gallery director Brianna Cartwright (played by Teyonah Parris of If Beale Street Could Talk), move into a luxury condo in Chicago’s recently gentrified Cabrini Green neighborhood. This particular area wasn't always so inviting, however, as decades prior the neighborhood was terrorized by a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand.

While out looking for inspiration for his artwork, McCoy comes in contact with a longtime Cabrini Green resident, played by Colman Domingo of HBO’s Euphoria, who tells him the terrifying story of Candyman. Seemingly unfazed, McCoy decides to channel Candyman for his benefit, exploring the ghost story through art. He will soon realize, however, that he may have done the unthinkable and summoned the figure back to the area.

Candyman, which is directed by Nia DaCosta and produced by Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld, and Ian Cooper from a screenplay by Peele, Rosenfeld, and DaCosta, comes to theaters June 12. You can get your first look at the reboot by pressing play below.
