Can CdG, an Art Gallery & an Artist Sell You the Smell of Earth?
COMME des GARÇONS Parfums new perfume is catchily titled “[ ].” And this is arguably the least landmark thing about it. No other perfume has resulted from such an unexpected assortment of collaborators, with COMME des GARÇONS Parfums creating the new fragrance together with an art institute and one of its own artists.
Dia Art Foundation runs three New York art galleries focused largely on minimalist and conceptual works from names like Donald Judd, Gerhard Richter, and American sculptor Meg Webster, the latter of whom created the scent with COMME des GARÇONS Parfums.
Sure, artists occasionally team up with perfumers for a custom scent (COMME des GARÇONS made a perfume with British composer Max Richter and his partner, visual artist Yulia Mahr, last year), but never with a gallery also involved.
This unusual union produces an equally unusual perfume. [ ] comes in polished silver pyramid packaging, mimicking Webster artworks like her pyramid of salt currently displayed in a solo show at Dia’s Beacon gallery, which closes next month after over two years on display.
But while the exterior looks like a Meg Webster sculpture, the scent inside smells like one.
Webster produces sculptures from natural materials like soil and hay, which match the earthy notes of her first scent including carrot seed oil and mushroom accord grounded by a mineral wood, sandalwood, and patchouli Madagascar base.
“I was drawn to the bodily experience of the natural world — soil underfoot, light moving through the trees, an eagle passing overhead, the smell of earth and forest air,” said Webster before expressing hope that her first scent, available now for $330, will help people “embrace these sensations in our day-to-day lives.”
