Let’s be honest, Crocs is not known as a pioneering footwear brand. The comfy rubber clogs haven’t really changed shape since they dropped in 2002 and there’s not a whole lot of boundary-pushing tech built in.

But, in recent months, we have seen a new push for relevance from the brand (as if it needed it; Crocs are, after all, the chosen footwear of everyone except Millenials) in the form of the Crocs x Lego Brick Clog, and now something much more futuristic: the Steven Smith x Crocs Ripple ‘Moonlight Neon Ocean’.

With a silhouette that closely resembles the flowing futurism of the Yeezy Foam Runner, the Crocs Ripple signals a new era for the brand. One where the form and tone is not as predictable as it has been thus far.

This comes under the creative hand of Crocs Creative Director Steven Smith, whose deliberate repositioning of the brand is informed by a long and illustrious career in the footwear industry.

After being previewed at ComplexCon and Art Basel, the Crocs Ripple has finally hit shelves at select retailers and online.

It lands in the Midnight Neon Ocean colorway — a sufficiently futuristic and Blade Runner-esque name for this silhouette, we think.

The fully molded construction has been built with sneakers in mind and offers a much more protected fit than Crocs’ classic perforated clogs. Still lightweight, still water-resistant, it recontextualizes Crocs’ practicality for a new demographic. And all this whilst the likes of Timberland rehash the rubber clogs' past for their own good...
