Legendary director David Lynch, whose vision sits behind cult classics like Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive will finally be recognized with an Oscar this year, The Academy revealed via Twitter yesterday. This will mark the first time Lynch has won an Oscar, despite his vast contribution to the film industry over the years.

Lynch, who is largely praised for his boundary-pushing, surrealist cinematic style, will receive an honorary statuette in October at the Governors Awards alongside three other recognized filmmakers: Lina Wertmuller, Wes Studi, and Geena Davis.

Over his long directorial career, which kicked off with his first feature length Eraserhead in 1977, Lynch has received three Academy Award Best Director nominations for Mullholland Drive, Blue Velvet, and The Elephant Man.

Most recently, Lynch directed a short called Ant Head, which was probably his weirdest short project yet, and he appeared in the video for Flying Lotus' new track "Fire is Coming." Watch below.
