Dries Van Noten Is Hosting a "Watermelon Party" at Los Angeles Flagship
Dries Van Noten will be exhibiting the work of American sculptor Misha Kahn at "The Little House," located just next to the label's Los Angeles flagship.
The exhibition, titled "Watermelon Party," is a reflection of the artist's experiences in quarantine, chiefly the idea of a "watermelon party" being hosted near the Kahn's family home during lockdown in Minnessota – and what such an event might entail.
If you're curious as to what a watermelon party is, Kahn offers some explanation: "in my scatterbrained, depressed stupor of a year, this watermelon party suggested purpose. It gave a bunch of random people, grouped together by proximity, an antidote to isolation. In a way, that’s what I’m always striving for in my work: an irreverent, all-ages serving of mystery with a big spoonful of why." The oversized and luridly coloured furniture is accompanied by some towering table lamps made out of ceramic and resin.
The exhibition will be further complemented by a small capsule collaboration between Dries Van Noten and Kahn containing a limited-edition printed silk bomber jacket and T-shirt with an original painterly motif by Kahn that speaks to his spontaneous style, "in my practice, I’m constantly throwing around new materials and processes, forever looking for a binding force, something to explain the why of it all to the outside world" says Kahn, "and maybe it’s simpler than I thought. Maybe it’s just a watermelon party two Tuesdays from now."
"Watermelon Party" will be open at The Little House for public viewing from April 1 to May 6.
