THE DRIVING FORCE: LUKE FRACHER, NYC'S GODFATHER OF VINTAGE KNOWS GOOD DESIGN

The moment is burned into Luke Fracher’s memory. As a pre-teen—no older than 11 or 12—a young Fracher flips through the pages of his favorite pop culture magazine, admiring the signature swagger of his favorite athletes, musicians, and cult icons that grace the glossy-coated editorial spreads. Soaking in the statement style and trendsetting iconography, the captivated youth lands on the back cover, immediately enamored by the image in front of him.

“It was an ad for the black and gold patent leather Air Jordan 1s,” Fracher wistfully recalls, “I just remember sitting there hoping I could get my hands on those shoes, thinking maybe one day I could be as cool as the people in the magazine.”

Growing up in Charlottesville, Virginia, a college town of about 45,000, Fracher cites sneakers and their dedicated fandom as a core component of his budding interest in fashion. Now, as undoubtedly one of the godfathers of the contemporary resale business, the acclaimed vintage clothing impresario looks back on those moments with a keen fondness: “Shoes existed outside of the mundane for me. It was a way to tangibly connect with something I only saw online.”

As Nissan preps to roll out the all-new 2025 Nissan KICKS, a car inspired by the dynamic design of sneakers, the storied brand hand-selected a few prominent voices and footwear aficionados to help give context to the unique concept. And, being the master tastemaker that he is, Fracher was a no-brainer to include—I mean, if the shoe fits, right?

Not only known for his carefully curated clothing selection but also for his ability to tap into niche communities, the head of NYC’s most popular vintage retailer has an eye for unexpected treasures. Stocking his store with everything from archival Prada steppers to artisanal Margiela trousers, Fracher knows quality when it’s in front of him—even if he can’t quite explain it.

“Honestly, I don’t have a definition for good design. I just know it when I see it,” the owner and operator of Luke’s admits. “There will be random things that I buy that no one else understands, but eventually, someone will come in super stoked about it. I just know what I like, and that’s all I go off of.”

Before becoming the retail royalty we know today, Fracher honed his craft at Legends, the local sneaker shop in his hometown, where he would grow his understanding of what makes the public tick and how to more authentically cultivate a space of like-minded individuals. For the seasoned retail veteran, it begins with a passion for product; from there, everything becomes intertwined.

“The most important thing for me is always keeping a broad frame of reference because you never know where one interest can take you,” Fracher shares. “For example, a lot of sneaker guys turn into car guys as they get older. It's almost like a natural progression because there is tons of overlap.”

Grounded in admiration for intentional craftsmanship and material storytelling, Nissan’s newest, and potentially most modish, addition to its storied lineup of performance vehicles adds even more substance to Fracher’s claim. Designed with a sleek protective body, chic interior, and textured finishes, the 2025 Nissan KICKS is the perfect blend of form and function—emphasis on the form since function is already a given when speaking about the iconic automotive brand.

From its vibrant two-tone color scheme to its bold character lines, the latest model mirrors motifs employed to fashion some of the most iconic sneakers in history. These seemingly minor and understated aesthetics make all the difference in both domains, becoming the deciding factors in separating the grails from the gimmicks.

“A love for classic cars and classic sneakers are so similar,” Fracher comments. “It all stems from a love for good design and an appreciation for a special type of subculture.”

While social media’s vintage vanguard is still plotting ways to expand his horizons, Fracher recognizes that sneaker culture and design are at the core of his journey. Now, as part of Nissan’s exclusive club of industry insiders, the Round Two alumnus is determined to steer the conversation forward, strengthening ties to the comprehensive community he has already established for himself.
