Engineered Garments has made magic with Vans for over a decade, dishing its first set of mismatched Vans back in 2013. It's now 2026 and Engineered Garments' remixed skate shoes still hit, because its formula for collaborative footwear is effectively perfect: take a familiar pair of shoes, mismatch 'em, repeat.

On its latest pair of Vans, though, Engineered Garments is toning down the contrast, which only makes for a more luxurious set of sneakers.

Revealed here by Highsnobiety, the latest EG x OTW By Vans Slip-On is offered in tonal white or black colorways, so simple that you might not even notice that they're extremely luxe and subtly patchworked.

But once you get up close, you can really appreciate Engineered Garments' tastefully mixed and matched panels of suede and leather, grounded by a satisfyingly meaty sole — the lack of foxing stripe makes for an extra-suave end product — and plush lining.

These are handsome skate sneakers that'll age like a more classic shoe but already start off plenty soft.

And the real Engineered Garments heads will appreciate the subtle callback to the incredibly good EG x Vans drop from Spring/Summer 2018, which delivered tonal Slip-Ons in shades both wearable and whacky. These were sumptuous slippers of the highest order and I personally wish I'd stocked up when I had the chance.

Of course, Engineered Garments has done right by this approach with a handful of other collaborative shoes, ranging from fuzzed-out trek slips to hardy work boots. But its Vans sneakers are such a perfect distillation of this approach, not least because they're one of the most wearable shoes ever made.

There's also something to be said about how perfectly understated the end product is, an instantly recognizable classic made better through understated elevation. Which, really, isn't a bad summary of Engineered Garments' oeuvre as a whole.
