You Can See Three Decades of Karl Lagerfeld’s Photography in a New Exhibition
An expansive exhibition of over 30 years of Karl Lagerfeld's photographic work has opened in Zurich.
While the late creative director of Chanel is being remembered for his indelible impact on fashion, less is known about his artistic career. Zürich-based Galerie Gmurzynska has exhibited his work since 1996. Following the news of his death, the gallery made the swift decision to commemorate his artistic practice with a spontaneous retrospective.
The sprawling survey exhibition, which opened on Thursday, February 21, includes black and white portraits of celebrities and peers such as Benicio del Toro, Jack Black, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Ryan Gosling. Galerie Gmurzynska has also included Lagerfeld's hand colored photographs from films like Gone With the Wind and a costume shot of Nicole Kidman.
The gallery included a quote from Lagerfeld himself within the exhibition announcement. On his artistic career he said, “What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce.”
“Homage to Karl Lagerfeld: 30 Years of Photography” is on view at Galerie Gmurzynska, Zurich, until May 15, 2019.
