In Amsterdam, a novel idea has taken root. What started out as a series of idealistic blueprints has turned into an apartment complex with over 200 units, all of which share an outdoor space.

The project, dubbed Parkrand Amsterdam, was completed in 2007 by a local firm named MVRDV. Architects wanted to play with the idea of creating a space that was simultaneously open and closed; they also wanted to play with volume. Dotted around the outside you'll find oversized sculpture--including giant plant pots--and tiny elephants that double as chairs. We'd say this is really more of an experience than a mere place to lay ones head.
