Patagonia's CEO Rose Marcario is leaving the company after six years on the job, effective June 12, Bloomberg reports.

The move — announced earlier today — was a surprise and comes as Patagonia emerges alongside the rest of retail from a lengthy shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

During her six-year tenure, Marcario significantly amped up Patagonia’s sustainable and environmentally-conscious initiatives, even suing President Trump over the handling of public lands in Utah. However, Marcario's exit comes amidst reports by former Patagonia staffers of a lack of diversity at the brand.

Patagonia, like many non-essential businesses, has been hard-hit by the coronavirus pandemic and was one of the earliest stores to close its doors in March. Chief Operating Officer Doug Freeman will lead the transition as he momentarily takes Marcario's place until a successor is found.
