Stüssy’s Founder Is Back to Making Streetwear for Himself
If you ever want to know what’s happening at S/DOUBLE, the streetwear label run by Stüssy founder Shawn Stussy, you have to be in Australia. After quietly disbanding S/DOUBLE in 2016, eight years after its founding and two decades after leaving his eponymous brand Stüssy, the designer cryptically announced S/DOUBLE's grand return with a handwritten mural outside skate and surf company Globe's Australian HQ.
Now, the rebooted S/DOUBLE has quietly entered its seventh season, and the collection debuted on Australian real estate long before it released online. The 71-year-old Stussy likes to keep things old-school, prioritizing billboards over Instagram posts. He also typically likes to keep in the background, but with this collection, he’s stepping into the spotlight.
Videos of Stussy hand-drawing the S-Double logo in his signature curlycue style, swirling motifs anchored by sharp graffiti-style lettering, were recently beamed onto Melbourne walls.
And this isn’t Mr. Stussy’s only cameo: The streetwear OG takes center stage in the seasonal campaign, shot by Shawn’s son, Tate Stussy.
Wearing a loose striped shirt, dark wide-leg jeans, board shoes, and a zippered S/Double coaches jacket, Stussy peers over the shoulder of one model sporting a baggy blazer with a bucket hat and flails his arms in the background as two models earnestly pose in graphic sweaters. He even stops to take a portrait, smirking slightly.
For a guy who keeps to himself and hardly ever gives interviews or appearances, this is a rare return to center stage.
Same goes for the clothes. S/DOUBLE Season 7 is classic Stussy, a So-Cal-flavored blend (or perhaps Golden Coast-flavored blend) of loosely cut workwear, ‘90s-ish plaid shirts, and boxy tees with printed with Stussy’s graffiti-style handiwork. This is the kind of stuff Stussy made a name for and from which he grew streetwear’s most enduring label.
Unfortunately, it’s all still only available in Australia. S/DOUBLE’s reboot has thus far been available exclusively in the world's flattest continent, because Australian brothers Peter and Stephen Hill, founders of Globe, are behind Stussy’s S/DOUBLE reboot. He seems more than content with keeping the project local, though.
“This is what 71 laps gets you... tenured knowledge, plenty wrinkles and chips, and for me, freedom,” Stussy recently captioned a self-portrait posted to Instagram. “[I’m] doing what I want.”
