A lock of platinum hair cascades across a cropped, glittery top as bubblegum pop beats blare from a loudspeaker on set. A bleach blonde pop star by the name of Britney is practicing her queues for a music video shoot — the year is 1999, and her extremely low-rise jeans confirm that. This was an era of expressive fashion — teeny-tiny graphic band tees and cut-off Daisy Duke shorts were street-style mainstays. Perhaps the only trend that wasn’t monumentally miniature at the time was our sneakers. Enter the reign of the stomper. Known as a fashionable founding member of the nostalgia-fueled Y2K aesthetic, Britney Spears was one of the first cultural icons to put Skechers on the map. Now, two decades later, the label continues its legacy with a brand-new offer that nods to the golden age of the chunky shoe. But how exactly did a retro “dad shoe” silhouette become a certified cool-girl-approved fad?
It all started with the Southern California-based brand’s “It’s the S” Energy sneaker campaign that rolled out that same year, starring the then-emerging and bubbly Spears. She was fresh on the scene, and the world was enamored with her every move, especially her spunky sartorial sense. All it took was for the burgeoning star to sport one pair of sneakers — stamping them with the Spears seal of approval — and before you could say “Hit Me, Baby One More Time,” they would fly off shelves en masse. It’s giving “I saw Cady Heron wearing army pants and flip flops, so I bought army pants and flip flops.” To date, Skechers has sold over 100 million pairs of the chunky Energy style — and that impact didn’t halt as the early 2000s came to a close.
As a result of the Energy’s mass adoration, another legend boldly emerged soon after. “D’Lites was really born as an evolution of the Skechers Energy. Following the success of the original Energy sneaker and the Premium update worn in 2000’s campaigns featuring Christina Aguilera, people were clearly gravitating toward statement-making sneaker silhouettes,” the brand’s Senior VP of Global Product Sourcing, Kathy Kartalis shared. She noted that following the massive success, the brand modernized its signature maximal aesthetic with a lighter-weight approach in 2007. That reconfiguration ultimately became D’Lites.
Striking, playful, and never sparing on the sparkle, D’Lites evolved into a marker of the moment for the label. Now, reminiscent Zillenials aspire to emulate the instantly identifiable style codes that characterized the early aughts of the 2000s — just a quick scroll through the discovery page on your favorite vintage retail site displays an enthusiastic affinity for the adventurous styles we grew up with. But there’s a certain intangible, irreplaceable quality of the fashion that shaped the era, and the throughline was an effortless sense of expression.
Kartalis expanded upon this, disclosing some of D’Lites’ characteristically Y2K design considerations. “The silhouette embraced the bold proportions and layered construction that defined the time, but also introduced softer, more playful detailing through elements like wavy overlays, sparkle accents, jewel-inspired heel details, and the script D’Lites logo with the rhinestone over the ‘i.’” She continued to list some other quirky elements the Skechers design team experimented with — from metallics to sparkle details to multicolored laces — that really cemented the shoe within the trends that were piquing at the turn of the millennium.
Eventually, what began in America in the early 2000s then traversed across many global scenes. Now, you can spot the Skechers D’Lites stomping across some of K-pop’s grandest stages, on the feet of athletes like Game 4 savior and NYC basketball star OG Anunoby, and on big and small screens everywhere, as the shoe has become a Gen Z-approved motif of retrophilia across music, sport, and fashion subcultures. But as trends ebb and flow over time, they must also evolve with consumers to avoid a fate spent rotating through the secondhand cycle. So Skechers reformulated to give D’Lites a delightful glow-up: introducing D’Lites 330.
Though the models were given a contemporary refresh, they didn’t forget their roots. D’Lites 330 takes all of the parts of the OG silhouette we know and love and repackages them into a refined, sneaker-inspired design, in multiple dynamic colorways from energetic to understated. “The design details that defined the Y2K era are still very much present, but we’ve elevated the shoe through updated materials and integrated comfort technologies,” says Chase Greenberg, Skechers’ VP of Product Development, Innovation, and Design. “The result feels nostalgic while still aligning with how consumers want to wear sneakers today — where style, versatility, and comfort all intersect.”
The hurdle for the modern iterations became striking a defined balance between heritage and innovation. Fashion and footwear’s pendulum is ever-swinging, so it’s no surprise that “blast from the past” styles eventually end up back en vogue — but it was repositioning the shoe for a cohort that’s distinctly outspoken and individualistic that became Skechers’ new challenge. “It really starts with understanding what made the original product resonate in the first place,” Greenberg expressed. And what made the shoe work was its strong visual identity, which remains intact, with the addition of more advanced, sculpted tooling and a streamlined profile.
As much as Skechers owes its success to maximalist, stand-out shapes — like the metallic, futuristic D’Lites 330 - Modern Retro Jogger — another major proponent of its footwear is comfort. Other premium features include Goodyear® rubber outsoles for enhanced traction and Motion Control Device components in the shoe’s sturdy midsole to provide added stability. By retaining the vivacious energy of the original shoe and pairing it with novel performance- and comfort-focused innovations, the brand was able to bottle those same subversive tendencies for a new generation of fashion and footwear aficionados, inviting new suitors into the fold.
"As the franchise evolved, Skechers continued reinterpreting D’Lites with collaborations like One Piece, or artist-driven interpretations,” Kartalis indicated, “It’s interesting how the franchise continued evolving alongside culture. Around 2016, D’Lites experienced a major resurgence across Asia, particularly in South Korea and within K-Pop culture, where artists and trendsetters embraced the silhouette. That momentum helped introduce the shoe to an entirely new generation globally.”
So now that Skechers has recaptured our attention, it’s up to the contemporary class to indoctrinate D’Lites 330 into their own wardrobes. Having previously served as a conduit for fearless adornment, the label hopes new consumers will use D’Lites 330 as a similar canvas for personal style. “What’s exciting is seeing younger consumers reinterpret Skechers heritage footwear, pairing it with everything from relaxed streetwear to more elevated styling,” Greenberg comments. “D’Lites has always represented individuality through its many evolutions, and we hope the 330 continues inspiring that same creativity for years to come.”
