Björk Gives Bad Coachella Fashion the Finger
On Sunday, Björk cut through Coachella's sartorial noise — neon crop-tops, shredded jean shorts, cowboy boots — with a series of insanely good outfits by Japanese designer Kei Ninomiya.
Björk, who has worn several Ninomiya-designed ensembles throughout her 2023 world tour, stuck a finger to everyone's expectations of Coachella style, a uniquely bad genre of rave-meets-boho-chic. Granted, we wouldn't expect the famously odd artist to show up in a flower crown and maxi skirt — she tends to favor the conceptual over the trendy (remember her swan dress?).
The Icelandic singer started off her set in a leather dress from Ninomiya's Fall/Winter 2021 collection. Up top, the bodice is covered in wispy, glassine spikes akin to optical fiber. Attached to the lower half of the garment is a wire bustle covered in sheer, black mesh.
The experimental ensemble was just the appetizer to an even freakier entrée. Later, Björk changed into another spiky Ninomiya design (this one debuted at the designer's FW 2023 show back in March) that enveloped her entire body in glass-like tentacles.
Whether she looked like that illustration of the coronavirus or a sea anemone, we can all agree: Björk's Ninomiya looks are precisely the opposite of what we've come to expect from Coachella fashion. They're also the sort of thing that only Björk can pull off — like every good dresser in history, the singer has an "it" factor that lends whatever she's wearing a special charm.
