New Balance

New Balance's technical running lineage has long been defined by muted greys, understated earth tones, and timeless tonal color-blocking. Diverging from its usual reserved aesthetic for a rare thematic release, the Boston brand drops the New Balance 2010 Halloween.

For years, New Balance has largely steered clear of full-blown holiday or novelty concepts, preferring to let rivals like Nike and adidas fight it out for seasonal storytelling dominance while the ever-mature New Balance sticks to high-end constructions and rolling out its Made in UK and US lines.

This release, however, is a resounding statement of just how well New Balance can execute a themed palette when it chooses to step into the arena. Not just satisfied with a seasonal Halloween color palette, the Boston label brings in glossy textures for another dimension.

A Black and Sea Salt base sets the foundation, lulling us into a false sense of security, only to shatter it with sharp Team Orange hits along the branding, laces, and midsole.

Breathable open-mesh in light Sea Salt battles with glossy Black panelling throughout the silhouette, highlighted by orange framing around the signature logo. Don’t bother checking the insoles for any ghost graphics, New Balance wouldn’t go that far.

The New Balance 2010 Halloween proves that New Balance can hit seasonal themes just as hard as the competition, it just often chooses not to. What makes this one such a success is that it’s wearable all year round, without assigning itself too enthusiastically to the Halloween theme.
