New Balance's dad shoes have reached the final stage of elderly innovation: Growing moss.

The New Balance 471 is one of NB's sleeker dad shoe offerings, but what the sneaker lacks in size it more than makes up for in textural intrigue by way of mossy green suede overlays that shake up the otherwise calm olive green sneaker.

These textile enhancements extend beyond the sneaker's algae-like aura to even the white lacey “N” in the center which deviates from the existing plant-esque vibe of the otherwise gorgeously greened-out sneaker. If you were ever wondering what a dad shoe would look like with a chlorophyll drip, well, here is your answer. Thanks, New Balance!

Available on the New Balance website for $110, this 471 is a hearty representation of NB's established dad-shoe lore.

See, despite pulling inspo from elderly walking shoes, New Balance's 471 sneaker is actually quite young, as it first released in March 2025. Yes, it's a dad shoe. Yes, it's still a baby. They exist!

In any case, there is something quite comforting about New Balance’s commitment to consistently whipping up new iterations of simple dad shoes. This is especially true given how many of New Balance's recent releases have been a bit more innovative, á la the never-ending stream of hybrid NB loafers the brand has been churning out.

Where these innovative shoes represent New Balance's propensity for branching out, the humble 471, in all its dad shoe glory, is more like a return home.
